Project Location Sunny Isles Beach, Florida
Entry DescriptionThe Ritz-Carlton Residences in Sunny Isles Beach, FL is an urban oasis composed of 212 condominium homes. One of the few standalone Ritz-Carlton Residences in the world features 2.2 acres of lush landscaping, pools and private beach amenities. Miami Lighting Design has designed all interior and exterior common areas for this project with a special emphasis on Certified Wildlife Lighting (known as Turtle Lighting) as required by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Department of Environmental Protection.
Each year, thousands of sea turtle hatchlings become disoriented and up to 80% die because of light pollution. Born at night, historically they follow the moonlight reflected off the sea. Today, hatchlings often mistakenly head toward brightly lit condominiums, hotels, restaurants, and streets, where they are at risk of being eaten by predators, run over by cars, or die in the hot sun the next day. This environmentally friendly lighting is mounted low, has full cut-off or at least shielded from the beach, and is lamped with amber LED that produces long-wavelength light that turtles have difficulty perceiving.
