Entry Description

The Luminous Project is a permanent, interactive, façade lighting installation that illuminates Capilano University’s main campus hub, the Birch Building. It was created to commemorate the university’s 50th anniversary.

The campus is nestled in a natural forested setting within a residential community, on the slopes of the North Vancouver mountains. With this dramatic site context in mind, Integral Light Studio provided lighting design and light art consulting services for the project, designing the overall concept for lighting the southern and western facades of the Birch Building, and creating the artistic concepts to illuminate the building in dynamic lighting.

Twenty four artistic light programs were created: an animated light show for the university’s 50th anniversary celebration, twenty one dynamic lighting scenes for annual holidays and special events at the university, and for all other days two lighting sequences of calming blues and teals that allude to water and sky.

Using the colours of the university’s logo in different combinations and pacing, The Luminous Project tells the story of Capilano University—its history and brand essence—through the power of light.
