Entry Description

The Campaign for Boston University Ice Show was the culminating event of a 7-year fundraising project. The event included lively performances from the Boston Pops, Feld Entertainment's aerialist ice skaters, and numerous student groups. Principal designer Christien Methot's lighting design included a vast array of moving lights to illuminate the entirety of Agganis Arena's massive floor, a two-tiered orchestral stage, a circular platform, synchronized color-changing pendants worn by the audience, and more.
The biggest challenges Design One overcame were the time constraints and ensuring smooth follow spot coverage throughout the show. Faced with little time in the arena with the rig, Methot relied on Design One's expertise in pre-visualization using Vision by Nemetschek to represent lighting looks and cues in advance. The large number of performers needing to be lit in a follow spot at the same time was another hurdle presented to Methot, especially considering the large floor area and fast movement of the ice skaters. This was solved through the combination of using the traditional follow spots at the arena combined with Robe's remote-operated BMFL™ FollowSpots on our rig.
