Entry DescriptionDrawing inspiration from Japanese traditions of rain chains and burning incense, we designed two light installations that embody a pair of opposing motions: water cascading downward, and smoke drifting upward. Cascade is an illuminated rain chain that guides water to bring an ethereal spark to peaceful rainy nights. Hand-blown glass shells are installed along a string with solar-powered LED units. The rain chain creates a pleasing sound as raindrops hit the glass surface and flow down each cup gracefully, interacting with the glow emanating from within.
The other piece, Plume, holds a incense cone inside two glass shells. When lit, the illuminated smoke gently seeps through the openings of the inner shell and becomes suspended within the outer shell, creating a drifting motion. The wisps of smoke dance softly in the light before gradually escaping, leaving behind a lingering scent of incense.
We believe that the mesmerizing power of fluid in nature lies in its ability to hold the observer still as itself moves and shifts. Through observing and interacting with the pieces, we hope people can take a momentary pause to appreciate the beauty of fluctuating fluid motion and experience a sense of mindfulness. Such quiet experience remind us that while each fleeting moment seems impermanent, together they form the order of nature — and within that order lies a sense of eternity.
Sustainability ApproachThese two pieces explore sustainability not only through materials and energy but through presence and emotional continuity. Designed to last, to be felt, and to inspire stillness, they invite a slower, more attentive way of living. Cascade, the outdoor piece, is powered by solar energy and interacts with rainwater naturally—requiring no external electricity. Plume, the indoor light, offers soft illumination with minimal energy input and is designed for repeated use. Its glass components are washable and reusable, reducing reliance on disposable decor and encouraging long-term, mindful interaction with light and scent.
