Entry DescriptionThe OWO is Grade II* listed and situated at one of London’s most historically important and powerful addresses. Respectfully negotiating the historic fabric of The OWO required creative solutions to potentially restrictive conditions, where lighting equipment or containment was not possible in the normal ways. Significant time was spent undergoing nighttime lighting trials to allow us to study not only the lit effect but also the luminaire position, visibility, fixings, and installation. Careful coordination with local planning authorities was essential in gaining approval for the lighting scheme. The result is the beautiful presentation of the magnificent architectural exterior and interiors in a way which had never been seen before.
A sensitive approach was taken when lighting the exterior, creating a striking impact with selected elements being softly lit to expose the sculptural architectural features. A lighting hierarchy was conceived for the façade with lighting becoming dimmer and fading towards the top of the towers, building, and into the night sky.
Ceilings could not be touched but could be lit from carefully concealed locations. Very warm, white lamping and added spots were integrated into the decorative lighting to provide accent to interior elements, rather than into the fabric of the interior where there were various conservation restrictions.
Sustainability ApproachWe have used lighting equipment sparingly, only where we feel it is required to achieve the desired effect. We used carefully controlled optics to deliver light to the intended surfaces and limit spill light, which in turn can not only be detrimental to the scheme but also wasteful in terms of energy. A dedicated lighting control system was installed to provide the operations team with a number of benefits as well as being helpful to the environment through carefully pre-set timed operations.
Our specification of high-quality lighting equipment from established lighting manufacturers provides assurance that the equipment will be long-lasting and will require low levels of maintenance reducing ongoing costs and resources. The high use of recyclable materials in all specified equipment ensures much of the lighting equipment can be refurbished or recycled at the end of its working life.
