Entry Description

The Shanghai Bicycle Stadium, located north of the Shanghai Chongming National Sports Training Base, is a world-class cycling venue integrating training, competition, research, and education. Covering 64,729 m² with a building area of 33,300 m², it fills the city’s gap in indoor track cycling facilities and serves as the national team’s southern base.

Situated on Chongming, a national ecological island, the design draws on local reed imagery. The façade adopts concave hyperbolic arcs forming rhythmic white petals. Aluminum and glass panels, shifting between solid and void, create a crown-like composition. The roof reinterprets a bicycle wheel: a spoked cable system produces dynamic serrated radiance, expressing speed and rhythm.

Lighting design reinforces the architectural vision, sculpting form and evoking athletic spirit.
Sculptural Light – Inground uplights emphasize petal-like curves, while pole-mounted floods wash concave surfaces like moonlight on reeds, merging into a glowing crown.
Wheel of Light – Roof-mounted projectors highlight the spoked system, suggesting rotating hubs, amplifying the stadium's identity.
Iconic Light – Multi-scene controls and reserved event interfaces transform the venue into a luminous emblem of international cycling, a nocturnal landmark for Shanghai and a symbol of sports-education integration.
