Entry DescriptionKlaipeda State Music Theater is a dialogue between heritage and contemporary architecture, where the historic building and a newly built volume merge into one fluid whole.Architects envisioned the renovation not as a conventional theater interior, but as an inviting, warm space that softens the boundary between public and artistic experience. The old theater was carefully restored and now opens into the new structure, creating a seamless journey for visitors. The new main hall stands out with unique hand-crafted clay walls, whose texture and rhythm evoke the movement of sea waves – a subtle reference to Klaipeda’s coastal identity. This tactile surface not only carries symbolic meaning but also offers a natural, earthy presence rarely seen in performance spaces.Warm tones and carpet-like textures climbing from floor to wall create an intimate atmosphere, in contrast to traditional theater formality.Lighting design plays a central role:in the main hall, spotlights graze the clay walls, bringing their wave-like texture to life with reflected light. In the atrium, cove lighting emphasizes curved architectural elements, while downlights with varied optics in corridors and common areas create theatrical, stage-like effects that still preserve coziness.A restored heritage chandelier in one atrium links past and present, becoming a luminous symbol of continuity within the renewed theater
Sustainability ApproachSustainability was a key principle in the design of Klaip?da State Music Theater. To minimize the project’s carbon footprint, lighting fixtures were sourced from local manufacturers, reducing transportation impact while supporting regional production. The lighting concept embraces adaptability through reusable and interchangeable luminaires, where different optics can be applied to the same fixture, extending product life and reducing waste. Circular economy principles are reflected in the careful restoration and reuse of heritage luminaires, giving them a new role within the renewed theater. High-efficiency fixtures are used throughout, while the entire system is controlled by advanced management tools that adjust intensity and timing to actual needs, ensuring minimal energy consumption without compromising atmosphere or functionality.
