Entry Description

CrossRail, envisioned for SafeCo Plaza, was a collaboration that brought minimalism, function, aesthetics, and weightlessness to the forefront of architectural lighting design. Designed in tandem, CrossRail creates intersecting planes of light that define the plaza’s sweeping canopy while preserving its sense of openness.

The ultra-slim "Cross" profile conceals high-performance LEDs and precision optics within a system that appears to float, delivering exceptional glare control and uniform illumination without visual clutter.

Echoing the plaza’s materiality and pre-defined grid, CrossRail integrates seamlessly with the structural rhythm of the existing site, guiding visitors from the public streetscape to the private interior with a quiet elegance.

Completed in 2023, SafeCo Plaza showcases the power of collaboration between architect, lighting designer, and manufacturer to achieve a solution where technology appears to disappear, allowing only light and elegant, minimal forms to remain.
Sustainability Approach

CrossRail embodies a sustainability roadmap by treating every stage of its life cycle as a design opportunity. Built from high-recycled aluminum with low-VOC finishes, its low-voltage, remotely powered design with constant-current operation delivers stable, energy-efficient performance while keeping the fixtures fully serviceable rather than replaceable. Precision optics maximize efficacy and comfort, proving that refined architectural lighting can also be both responsibly refined and resilient.
