Entry Description>Role and Purpose: Toward a Station of Wonder
Yumeshima Station, developed by Osaka Metro to support Expo 2025, will serve as the main gateway for 28.2 million visitors. But its role extends beyond the Expo—it is built to last 100 years and grow with the city. As a future-forward station, it is more than a transit hub; it is a destination - a pavilion-like space full of excitement and discovery.
>Design Concept: “The Moving World Theater” – A station showcasing movement and life
The design uses “movement” as its theme, symbolizing life and the energy of existence. Like a theater where stories unfold, the station offers an ever-changing environment filled with motion, diversity, and discovery. Visitors pass through scenes inspired by Japanese culture, experiencing new impressions with every visit.
>Japan’s “Culture × Technology”: Five Spatial Production Methods
This concept is realized through five spatial methods: 1. an origami ceiling based on train operation diagrams, symbolizing precision and tradition; 2. reflections and motion, where light and people create shifting, momentary art; 3. lighting that enhances space and emotion; 4. authentic, sustainable materials like aluminum for durability and beauty; and 5. operational staging that harmonizes time, flow, and movement. These elements blend Japan’s culture and technology into a unique theater-like station experience.
Sustainability Approach> Designed for Longevity
The station is designed to operate efficiently for over 100 years by minimizing energy use and simplifying maintenance.
> Minimal Lighting with Smart Control
Lighting fixtures are strategically placed in minimal numbers to provide sufficient brightness while enhancing the space. The system automatically adjusts according to natural light and operating hours, considering both environmental impact and human health.
> High-Efficiency, High-Quality Lighting Integrated with Architecture
High-efficiency, high color-rendering LED fixtures are seamlessly integrated into the ceiling units. Their detailed installation allows for easy replacement. Reflective, recyclable aluminum ceiling panels amplify the light, making the space feel brighter than the actual number of fixtures would suggest.
