Entry DescriptionThis lighting design reinterprets the spatial and spiritual identity of an iconic chapel known for its curved architecture and symbolic presence. Through indirect illumination, the design reveals the fluidity of the chapel’s structural form, creating a dialogue between light, shadow, and sacred space. Interior lighting integrates seamlessly with hyperbolic surfaces, using walls as reflectors to distribute light evenly while preserving the purity of the architecture. Asymmetric optics minimize glare, enhancing visual comfort during worship and meditation. A dynamic control system allows flexible lighting scenes for rituals, contemplation, or public exhibitions. Exterior lighting reinforces the chapel’s nighttime presence within an open landscape. Wall-washing fixtures highlight the diamond-patterned tiles, while shielded beams reduce light spill. The cross atop the chapel is illuminated with balanced, linear lighting to maintain visual prominence and symbolic clarity. The overall concept respects the integrity of the original structure while introducing a modern, poetic lighting language that elevates both function and emotion. This project enhances the sacred atmosphere without distraction, allowing light to act as a quiet, reverent presence that evolves with time and use.
Sustainability ApproachThis project prioritizes environmental responsibility through energy-efficient LED fixtures and intelligent control systems that adjust light levels by zone, time, and activity. By favoring indirect lighting and low-glare optics, it reduces over-illumination and maximizes material reflectance. All luminaires are long-life, low-maintenance models with high luminous efficacy, lowering total energy consumption. Exterior lighting features precise beam angles and integrated shielding to minimize light pollution and ecological disruption. The design minimizes structural intervention by reusing existing mounting points and following a refit-first principle, significantly reducing installation impact and material waste. It embodies a balance of sustainability, spirituality, and architectural legacy.
