Project Location Harrods, London
Entry DescriptionHoused in an area of Harrods that features historic decorative ceilings, this listed ceiling could not be disturbed. To overcome this, a bespoke suspended track solution was designed allowing spotlighting to brand mats, displays and mannequins. The track is powered from a few locations and suspended below the historic ceiling in harmony with its heritage. Concealed cabling in the track profile distributes power for retail spotlighting and smaller upward spotlights highlighting the historic ceiling features.
Entrances are framed by brandable mannequin displays backlit by a warm halo of light and discreetly spot lit from three sides, creating dramatic displays for brands within the development. The combination of welcoming 2400K indirect lighting and 2700K high colour rendering spotlighting sets the tone throughout the department, with consistent lighting being used from a limited number of suppliers, creating a feeling of unity.
Around perimeters, concealed indirect lighting washes fluted bulkheads, offering ambient light to the space, while showcasing architecture and providing a consistent illuminated signage band for branding.
Ambient warm light is punctuated by low glare Hi CRI 2700K spotlighting, creating contrast to accentuate luxurious fabrics. LDI took care to ensure minimal direct illumination to the floor, ensuring garments and product displays are the main feature.
Sustainability ApproachThe track luminaires were specifically selected from a UK supplier with sustainability in mind, excellent circularity (2.7, TM66) and strong embodied carbon (TM65) scores, and the number of fittings was carefully considered keeping energy consumption across the department low by focussing light only where needed. The fittings utilise high efficacy LED’s (>102 lm/W)reducing power consumption while maintaining high quality illumination from TIR optics delivering high LOR with precise high contrast, minimising spill light and unnecessary energy consumption. Almost all track lighting is product focussed allowing general light levels to be lower, further reducing energy for a sustainably focussed and exclusive setting.
All luminaires were sampled, compared and demonstrated, to ensure balance of effect and tone for longevity of use. All fittings were chosen for circularity of parts.
