Entry Description

The site-specific work Echo was developed for the newly constructed exhibition pavilion in Heilbronn, designed by the architecture firm Sauerbruch Hutton. The pavilion was created to complement the ensemble on the Experimenta Science Campus in the city center with a temporary structure dedicated to artificial intelligence.
As soon as night falls, visitors on the plaza can playfully engage with the AI-controlled light installation. The user’s vocal input is captured through a microphone installed inside a free-standing phonographic element in front of the pavilion and translated into light using AI. Between the phonographic element and the facade, a kind of stage emerges in which visitors can immerse themselves in moving light landscapes. By experiencing this intuitive interaction with a light installation and the direct application of an AI programmed for emotional exchange, the complexity of the topic becomes tangible through one's own reactions.
The programming and implementation of the AI were developed in close collaboration with media artist Christian Riekoff and AI consultant Pavel Mayer and are based on public training data in the fields of emotion recognition and sound classification (such as laughter or singing) and translated into a parametric programming language. The lighting solution using RGBL light fixtures was developed in cooperation with Andreas Barthelmes.
