Entry DescriptionThis exhibition presents a rare look into one of the largest private collections of YSL. The exhibition explores three key periods: Yves’ early years at Dior, his influential couture collections, and the launch of Rive Gauche in 1966.
Working cohesively with Patrick Kinmonth’s fantastical scenography & the collection we gave each section a unique character.
The first section YSL for Dior features exquisite pieces from early in the designer's career. Inspired by the scenography we created an elegant reflected light in the Parisian salon set and used key light with singular shadows to express the masterly form & techniques in each piece.
Moving into the next section, a magical garden where the Haute couture collections of House of Yves Saint Laurent are grouped from daywear to individual star commissions to the glamour of evening wear. Here we lit to animate the pieces as if in dialogue with each other. The scenography moves from day to night and we create elongated shadows and chinks of lights for a layered choreography of light and form.
The final section of the exhibition features the evolution to SAINT LAURENT Rive Gauche, bringing couture quality to ready to wear. With the Mondrian-esque scenography we injected energy and vibrancy by layering a lit geometry. We aimed to capture the pieces as if in a window or camera lens, suggesting a sense of nowness & modernity.
Sustainability ApproachOur lighting design brings lasting value to the museum through a sustainable and future-proof approach. All fixtures specified are LED, to allow flexible re- use for future exhibitions. We used mainly existing museum stock fittings to keep the budget low as well as sustainable. A small amount of new fittings were purchased which were specified by us in the highest colour rendering LED, keeping robustness and future re-use at the forefront in our criteria. Accessibility was also a core consideration: lighting was carefully integrated to eliminate glare and ensure comfortable viewing for all visitors, including wheelchair users. This thoughtful and resource-efficient design supports both the our environmental goals and its inclusive mission.
