Entry DescriptionIn ØZI’s album SWIRL, diverse musical and cultural elements intertwine to create a psychedelic soundscape. The lighting design centers around the musical atmosphere, emphasizing rhythm, spatial depth, and color-driven storytelling. It amplifies the emotion of each track and deepens the audience’s emotional connection to the music. To achieve this, the lighting design significantly reduces the use of follow spots during the performance, instead utilizing side lighting and silhouettes as the primary sources, accompanied by heavy use of fog. This approach shifts the focus away from the artist as the central figure, positioning them instead as part of the music itself.
As a performance themed around the concept of a Swirl, the lighting design features a vertical truss placed behind the split LED screens, stretching from the stage floor to above the audience. This breaks away from the conventional top-down view of a swirl, offering a vertical profile perspective instead—symbolizing that both audience and performers are immersed at the same depth within the music, rather than existing in a binary relationship of observer and observed.
Sustainability ApproachWe used energy-efficient, reusable LED fixtures to reduce power consumption and heat emission without compromising visual impact. To minimize on-site energy use, we utilized lighting visualization software to pre-program effects in a virtual environment, streamlining setup time and reducing carbon output.
By optimizing fixture quantity and placement, we achieved rich visual expression with minimal resource use. Through these actions, we not only reduced the event’s environmental footprint but also demonstrated how stage lighting can be both impactful and sustainable.
