Entry Description

Papara Park in Trabzon, Türkiye, was reimagined from a traditional sports facility into a full-scale entertainment venue capable of expressing the identity of Trabzonspor through light. The existing HID system delivered static illumination, with heavy fixtures that strained the catwalk structures and created uneven broadcast lighting and shadow zones that affected broadcast clarity. With limited structural capacity on catwalks, increasing light performance without reinforcing supports was a core design constraint. A system redesign required a delicate solution that balanced lightweight engineering with visual drama.

The new entertainment lighting design deploys 264 SUFA-P 1.35kW LED luminaires, selected for low wind load and high-output performance, enabling direct installation on the existing steel racks without altering the stadium architecture. The design achieves FIFA Standard A lighting with average horizontal illuminance over 3000 lux and exceptional vertical lighting for broadcast. Color-blending RGBW entertainment fixtures were integrated into the same system, allowing Papara Park to bask in the signature claret and blue tones of Trabzonspor Kulübü. The lighting design enhances both match visibility and atmosphere by activating dynamic show sequences, ceremonies, and crowd engagement moments from a unified control interface.
Sustainability Approach

The Papara Park lighting upgrade prioritized structural reuse and carbon reduction by retaining the existing catwalk system rather than replacing it. By switching from 792kW of HID load to 356kW of LED, the design reduced installed energy and carbon emissions by more than 50% yet doubling light performance. Each SUFA-P sportslight fixture weighed just 12.3kg and decreased wind-load by 35% across the lighting system, reducing both material use and transport emissions across the entire project cycle. The compact luminaire form allowed seamless integration onto the existing steel infrastructure, eliminating additional materials fabrication and preserving the architectural lines of the stadium. Controlled beam and Inner Visor technology minimized spill light and glare, protecting surrounding urban areas and lowering light pollution impact on night skies and nearby residents.
