Entry Description

Created as part of a competition to reimagine the user experience at the Palm Beach County Convention Center, SKYroom is an outdoor art environment that celebrates the iconic sunlight of South Florida.
The lighting design team worked closely with the artist to develop the sculptural screen element, referencing studies of local sun cycles to determine the material, size of the openings, pattern, and placement of dichroic glass to produce the desired effect during the daytime: a dynamic display of shadows and subtle dichroic colors that celebrate the path of the sun and the seasonal changes from equinox to solstice.
Tiny adjustable dynamic white luminaires are concealed within the structural elements of the screen to create a seamless transition from day to night. The team conducted mockups to determine the placement of accent lighting and dichroic glass, which is layered between the internal light source and the surface of the sculptural screen to produce the desired patterns at all hours of the day.
The architectural lighting of the courtyard is emitted by overhead-mounted, shielded color-changing luminaires. A dynamic lighting control system provides the flexibility to transform the space from a tranquil setting to a vibrant themed environment depending on the program, occupancy, timeclock, and curfew, with each luminaire zoned individually for lower energy consumption.
