Entry Description

At night, this double-handled arch comes alive with dynamic uplighting focused on the underside of the arches, which are in shadow during the day. The luminaires follow the pattern of the cables with additional luminaires on the end beams, illuminating the arches down to their foundations. Custom controls are pre-programmed with more than 25 celebratory scenes that include changing seasons, events, and holidays throughout the year. Extreme temperatures, harsh winters, a high floodplain and its great distance from shore required robust luminaire and control distribution specifications. With high standards for maintenance and durability, the luminaire finishes were selected to mitigate corrosion, and strategically located to allow for accessible maintenance and to prevent vandalism. Mounting details for roadway level luminaires were developed with integrated attachment holes in the design process so the steel deck beams could be manufactured offsite. Along the popular pedestrian path, the overlook and illuminated glass oculus create an inviting respite for travelers. The Identity Element columns incorporate a clever integration of reflective blue highway sign material, which evenly distributes the illumination from a single light placed at the bottom of each column. After 13 years of planning, fund-raising, and design the bridge stands today as a celebration for the community.
