Entry DescriptionChina Pavilion was one of the 63 national pavilions at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. Visitors could walk through the scroll-style colonnade and read about China's 40-year urban renewal process in the architectural models or art installations at each column's booth.
As the only light source in the venue, the luminous column not only provides booth lighting but also provides the brightness of the exhibition hall space. The light transmitted through the acrylic was soft and even, full of Chinese traditional charm, emitting hazy light like lanterns.
The design difficulty lies in how to achieve a 360° uniform luminous cylinder without dark areas. After three mock-ups with different column structures, the structure with a central support and an acrylic sleeve was finally determined. The light sources were located in the center and illuminate the surroundings, showing a uniform light effect through the acrylic cylinder. In addition, considering the different light transmittances of red acrylic and white acrylic, a dimming system was set up for the internal light source in order to achieve the same brightness.
Sustainability Approach1.The luminous columns not only provided functional lighting for the booth, but also served as ambient lighting for the space. In this way, we maximized the efficiency of lighting fixtures and avoided the use of floodlights in traditional exhibition halls.
2.The light source of the light columns adopted 100lm/W high-efficiency LED light strips, which achieved the brightest lighting effect within limited power.
3.The internal light source LED strips were designed to be removable and can be collected and reused after the exhibition.
