Entry Description

In "The New Old Collection," we journey like archaeologists and travelers through the cultural landscapes of East Asia, seeking out breadcrumbs across the timeline. We gather these fragments to craft new objects that echo the essence and silhouette of East Asia, transforming each yesterday into the living artifacts of tomorrow.

In the 19th century, the invention of the light tube emerged, and in response to industrial needs, the explosion-proof light—now a significant vintage item—was developed. What would an industrial-style explosion-proof light tube look like with an Oriental interpretation?

We discovered that the sense of multiple arrays evokes a familiar feeling in East Asian culture, seen in objects like water wheels, tea brushes, scrolls, bamboo blinds, fans, and the initial framework of lanterns. The complex yet geometrically arranged forms repeatedly outline themselves in lines, leading to the creation of the elongated lamp resembling "churros."

The New Old Tube Light - Churros I not only utilizes the warmth provided by wooden strips but also finds minimalist order within multiple arrays, creating a sense of volume in the lamp. Functionally, it offers both upward and downward light sources, providing even illumination on tabletops while also offering indirect lighting above the lamp, enhancing the spatial layering.

Sustainability Approach

The goal of the Churros Lighting Collection is indeed to reuse materials from the original space. This approach not only minimizes waste but also ensures that each lamp is uniquely tied to its environment, emphasizing sustainability through the repurposing of local resources. The design aims to reduce the environmental footprint by integrating recycled materials, promoting a circular economy, and supporting localized craftsmanship.
