Entry DescriptionDrawing inspiration from the New York subway, the lighting design for the Glossier Soho Flagship creates an immersive and dynamic environment that resonates with the brand's identity. Glossier’s retail shops are iconic spaces that serve as Instagram backdrop for beauty enthusiasts, creating a unique lighting challenge. The space must appear as good through a camera lens as in person. The use of diffuse, direct, and ambient lighting in each distinct area must be precisely calibrated to provide bright, shadow-free lighting that is flattering in reality and optimal for photography. Through research and mockups, the lighting designers determined all fixtures specified must have a CRI of 90+ with a minimum R9 score of 60 or better for an accurate rendition of the products and skin tones.
Sustainability ApproachThe design seamlessly incorporates and balances the daylight, bringing an airy and sunlit feel to the space. Daylight sensors strategically located by exposure dim groups of lighting in response to the daylight to conserve energy and maintain the prescribed light level, ensuring the space is not unnecessarily over lit. After hours, timeclock sequences stagger the shutoff of the sales floor lighting to preserve the store’s street presence while reducing the electric load by 90%.
