Entry Description

The inaugural Augustinus Bader flagship in London redefines luxury wellness through The Skin Lab's innovative design, promising a holistic experience. The approach underscores the brand's dedication to cellular restoration, with the space's architecture featuring organic, flowing lines highlighted by meticulously integrated lighting. A notable challenge was achieving ambient and functional lighting without conventional downlights, leading to the strategic use of perimeter coves and curtain grazers. The lighting, primarily set at a warm 2700K and supplemented by tunable white LED technology, accurately represents the brand’s iconic blue and copper hues.

In the waiting room, a colour-changing skylight creates the illusion of a natural daylight transition, mimicking the sky-cloud effects and was inspired by James Turrell’s work. Similarly, the treatment rooms feature skylights that not only simulate openings to the outdoors but also set a special mood with coloured lighting scenarios, based on the colour science, and preparing clients for treatments. For instance, red light energises, suitable for rejuvenating treatments; blue light cools, and green induces relaxation.

This project exemplifies how lighting design plays a pivotal role in shaping spatial experiences, marking a collaborative effort between designers, architects, and the client to redefine luxury wellness spaces.
Sustainability Approach

The use of dimmable lights, along with an advanced control system that includes automatic scenarios and presence sensors, enables precise lighting adjustments, significantly reducing unnecessary power consumption and contributing to the building’s overall energy efficiency. Beyond energy efficiency, the project prioritizes sustainability in its material sourcing and building practices. All lighting fixtures are sourced from manufacturers committed to sustainable practices, ensuring that every component adheres to strict environmental standards from production to disposal.
