Entry DescriptionThe new bridge in Kalix, is one of Sweden’s Northern towns near the border with Finland.
Being one of the few connections across the river, Kalix bridge is an important link on the E4 highway. The brief by Trafikverket, the Swedish Traffic Authority, was to design an inviting gateway to the central town, whilst also enhancing the architectural construction with subtle means and contributing to the atmosphere of the city. The municipality uses a slogan to describe Kalix as a place "where the river meets the sea," which shows how strongly the city identifies with the river.
The collaboration of lighting designers, architects and engineers at Sweco has been a key factor for success leading to fulfillment of both aesthetic and technical requirements. A series of arches are illuminated with accents of cool light to create a landmark that draws attention to the magic of the river landscape and the historical buildings on its banks. The lighting design and the high contrast enhances the structure of the bridge during the long dark hours in the winter.
Sustainability ApproachWell-balanced light levels and shielded fixtures that reduce light pollution and stray light have been an important part of the ecological considerations. Socially, illuminating the bridge has led to an increased sense of security and well-being. Pedestrian and bicycle paths are connected from the main route to nearby areas for better mobility and integration between neighborhoods.
