Entry Description

This project presents an environmentally conscious lighting space design crafted for an interior design trade fair. The featured items are lighting fixtures meticulously created by skilled Japanese artisans, requiring a setting that would highlight their delicate expressions and soft illumination. Given the brief five-day exhibition period, minimizing environmental impact was paramount. Consequently, careful consideration was given to the selection of materials, leading to the choice of cardboard—both recyclable and capable of creating a warm ambiance when illuminated. This paper material also provided excellent workability, allowing for the creation of freeform designs, such as curved walls that embrace the products. Additionally, by layering the cardboard to resemble geological strata, the light is absorbed and reflected in a way that makes the entire space glow. The lighting fixtures themselves produce varying shades within the space, eliminating the need for external light sources like spotlights. Through the seamless integration of lighting design with the materials and structure, we successfully created a distinctive and impactful lighting environment.
Sustainability Approach

We considered it essential to minimize environmental impact as much as possible for the five-day exhibition. To achieve this, recyclable cardboard was used for the overall structure, and Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) was employed for the tabletops where the lighting fixtures are placed, as a certain level of rigidity was required. This approach minimized waste generation, and the use of lightweight and compact paper materials made transportation easier. Additionally, the specifications of these materials made construction and dismantling easy, requiring fewer workers and reducing the burden on them. This resulted in an efficient yet environmentally and socially conscious exhibition design.
