Entry DescriptionThis is an unusual project. A couple, both Gallery owners and art collectors, wanted to add a small private open air Art garden to their property in which a “Folie”, an inhabitable sculpture to house a three spaces program was to be created.
The new “Folie” will join the collection of existing sculptures, while allowing for its functional use purpose with two large volumes, an isolated massage room on one, and an exercise space and bathroom on the other. The facade has four types of concrete bricks custom designed to allow the total configuration of the exterior shell.
The project is conceived as a “Comprehensive Work of Art”, an opportunity to design and manufacture each of the elements that comprises it. Together with all the architectural elements like Concrete Bricks, Air Vents, Stone vanity, Doors with Bronze Pulls, Basalt Benches and Acoustic Ceilings, an Anonymous interior wall grazing Perimeter of Light was conceived.
The lighting concept for this merely 45m2 inhabitable sculpture that appears to be a rigid, monolithic block during the day allowing light to enter through the offset between each brick, is for when night falls, to be transformed into a translucent floating element enhancing the interaction of its glass and concrete bricks layers, turning itself into a soft lantern of light to its surrounding garden of art.
Sustainability ApproachWe approached sustainability in the form of an energy efficient design with the specification of an automated control system with Astronomic timeclock to carefully control not only the Pavillion lighting but also the landscape and artwork lighting in the surrounding garden. For the interior, occupancy sensors and a natural lighting sensor were included for a completely handsfree automated lighting operation when the Pavilion is in use together with keypads allowing for multiple lighting preset scenes to be be called for specific tasks, from massaging and relaxation with a very low soft ambient lighting to a higher lighting level for exercising and active moments.
