Entry Description

This project takes place at the historic Martial Arts Hall located in Taichung, Taiwan, built in 1937. As one of the city's few remaining martial arts halls from the Japanese colonial period, it holds significant historical value. Currently, the hall serves as the preparatory office for the National Comics Museum. The primary challenge is preserving the building’s historical architecture while incorporating modern lighting design within a limited budget. The aim is to balance modernization and historical preservation, ensuring that the visual design meets contemporary needs while retaining the essence of the original Japanese style.
The lighting strategy enhances the architectural beauty and emphasizes key features such as the rooflines and eaves, highlighting their geometric qualities and resonating with the comic theme of the museum. We employ highly adjustable lighting systems that not only manage energy efficiently but also meet visual demands and provide flexibility for future expansions. The lighting fixtures integrate harmoniously with the building’s structure and the surrounding environment, maintaining a delicate balance between historical authenticity and modern design. Additionally, thoughtful attention is given to the interplay of light and shadow, using varying brightness levels to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Sustainability Approach

Our sustainability approach focuses on reducing environmental impact while preserving the historical integrity of the building. We follow circular economy principles, reusing original materials and minimizing waste to lower the carbon footprint. The energy-efficient lighting system uses DMX control and dimmable fixtures to optimize energy consumption without compromising visual quality. Night sky protection measures are integrated to minimize light pollution, adhering to international standards.
We selected low-emission, recyclable materials like LED lights and aluminum fixtures, ensuring both durability and sustainability. This project reflects a commitment to balancing heritage preservation with responsible, eco-friendly design practices, delivering an energy-efficient and environmentally conscious restoration.
