Entry DescriptionLocated in the historic heart of Nicosia walled city, the capital of Cyprus, the Nicosia Municipality Town Hall is a prominent landmark. Our lighting design aimed to pay homage to the surrounding antiquities while illuminating the building’s and neighbourhood’s unique identity. It was vital for us to reveal the intricate woven architecture of the Main Hall. Soft, indirect lighting tones were used to wash the façade, creating a visual envelope that wraps around the building while being visible to visitors and pedestrians. Following the architect's concept of a cocoon-inspired design, the lighting scheme uses cooler tones for the exterior and warmer ones for the interior.
The client's vision was to consolidate the scattered municipal buildings into a single, multipurpose site and to create a comprehensive hub between the civic and public domains. To that purpose, the lighting design takes advantage of material selection and architectural finishes. The intelligent use of the lighting creates a sense of comfort and provokes a unique visual interest, making the building stand out as a cultural landmark. At night, the carefully applied lighting design creates a reference point in the city's urban landscape. The combination of materials and finishes establishes a welcoming atmosphere that encourages interaction and community engagement.
Sustainability ApproachThe challenge was designing a sustainable solution that minimizes energy consumption while enhancing the architectural features and providing sufficient functional lighting for various functions. To achieve this, the design incorporated automation systems and DALI technologies, contributing to the building's sustainability and energy efficiency. Additionally, high-efficiency lighting fixtures were selected to reduce energy consumption and minimize environmental impact. Integrating these systems and technologies has enabled the building to achieve a high level of sustainability while also providing a functional and well-lit environment for all occupants and visitors.
