Entry DescriptionKinokuniya is the largest bookstore chain origin from Japan. That’s the main reason Kinokuniya is deeply rooted with Japanese culture & philosophy. All things has meaning and value. Refer to this, we consider every interior space elements of the bookstore as meaningful and valuable ingredients for our design intent.
It seems relevant to bring the impression of natural feel of the daylight into this bookstore, as if visitors are reading under the skylight full of books. The subtle curve cove lighting on major portion of area create pleasant natural ambiance yet also give sense of modern & seamless design to the interior space. Intentional brighter level of light level on the backdrop area of bookshelves was done to attract people within vicinity as it create sense of brighter retail display from afar. Higher lighting contrast applied & integrated within bookshelves with highest possible CRI truly make the bookshelves act as main features and direct customer to find the book easily and tempted to read it almost immediately on spot. There is also special area with custom integrated table lamp to read big books conveniently.
Some of integrated lighting on the top of bookshelves reflected to the ceiling to add required ambiance for reading activities as well. Tunable white linear light is used within the kids area to add subtle dynamic effect for the bookstores.
Sustainability ApproachAs commercial bookstores, the main challenge of the lighting design is to maintain lumen level so that it has to be sufficient to do reading & learning activities.
Fortunately, there is big windows that give full of daylight effect into the bookstores. We try to emphasize this given bless by optimizing lighting circuit so that part of the area that has direct impact of the daylight can be turn off using timer mostly during daytime.
Application of tunable white use preset lighting system on kids area add sustainable value for the project as well, as we can control the intensity throughout the day.
