Entry Description

Our lighting approach is the coexistence between humans and nature in harmony. Cultural and artistic complex Hwadam botanic garden offers visitors fresh perspectives of the garden’s various stories – lighting applied as the representative of unspoken connection among architectural objects, art pieces, and the nature. Overall intent is to mimic daylight’s properties as time passes by. Inspired by solar movement that produces different ambiences for the same space, we appreciate the scenes created by combination of direct/diffused light and shadows that generate senses of time and visual changes in textures and try to implement these features to both architectural and natural objects. Not only lit pieces, but patterns of shadows also allow us to reinterpret the original characteristics of the objects. For the main piece of the indoor gallery space, “Stone composition 039” (refer to YouTube video), we created moving light scenes with 7 track heads by DALI system preset. Each head is on/off one after another with different CCT to perform like the solar movement and color properties. As the lights flow, the shape of the shadow of the stone changes – it can modify the occupants’ sensation and perception of the object within the environment. This allows visitors to revisit relationships between human and nature by appreciating the different looks of nature that lighting created.
Sustainability Approach

As the site is in the middle of the forest, it was critical that we make sure to avoid excessive and inappropriate use of lighting for the outdoor garden area. All upward fixtures were specified with anti-glare shield and louver to reduce light distribution toward the dark sky. Regarding light pollution, we utilized downward indirect light at the objet staircase where we needed to emphasize and highlight to create a focal point that provides visitors with special memories. Also, dimming system was applied to control the brightness as needed that can enhance energy efficiency and contribute to extended lifespan of fixtures. In construction stage, we ensured that light fixtures have adequate ventilation so it wouldn’t be damaged by too much heat. Also, silicon type of linear fixture was avoided to prevent strain from outside temperature leading to prolonged maintenance cycle.
