Entry Description

The light for the CF Toronto Eaton Centre Bridge creates a landmark after-dark identity in the city, while contributing a genuine sense of magic to the journey between the architecturally contrasting buildings it links. Early collaboration within the design team and close attention to detail contributed to achieving the beautiful and apparently effortless lighting.

Pedestrians entering the bridge are wrapped in a warm glow. Carefully concealed lighting enhances the torque and twist of the surfaces and joints lines, revealing the unique geometries. As the proportion of glazing increases along the bridge, glow from a soft frit applied to the glass softens and balances the experience of the transition from opaque to transparent. At deck level, a soft line of light encourages movement, supplementing functional levels without competing with the architectural forms. Outside, the backlit soffit overhanging the sidewalk glows homogenously to create a positive experience for pedestrians below.
