Entry DescriptionThe Tianjin Juilliard School is a new iconic building located on the prominent riverside. Educational and administrative buildings were designed to integrate into the city night view while the exterior and interior lighting accentuates the faceted pavilions creating the feeling of a “town square.” Special interior lighting dramatizes the concert hall’s presence in the reflecting pool.
The site lighting is subtle to avoid competing with the buildings and minimize visual clutter. Pedestrian paths are illuminated by the ambient glow from the buildings with supplemental low-level lighting to create a calm inviting environment. The facade lighting reinforces the reading of these unique buildings as a welcoming public attraction. It supports the architecture at appropriate light-levels while creating an opportunity to place special emphasis on the Recital Hall. The warmth of the wood canopies is reinforced by in-ground uplighting to draw patrons inward.
Inside, concealed lighting transforms the atrium connecting bridge into a glowing link between the solid volumes. Careful, intentional lighting solutions in the practice studios contribute to the overall nighttime project identity.

The launch of Tillotson Design Associates came just after Ms. Tillotson completed lighting designs for the Seattle Central Public Library and Prada Beverly Hills with the Office for Metropolitan Architecture.
