Project Location West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong
Entry DescriptionWith forms inspired by iconography from the ancient art of Chinese Opera, the Xiqu Centre is the jewel of the West Kowloon district of Hong Kong.
The most challenging aspect of the project was to maintain design excellence while working with a multinational team to address a tight budget, aggressive schedule, complex program, and unique procurement process. Concepts were established early on, yet the selection and refinement of products and strategies to accomplish these goals was a multi-year process.
Layers of light are used to reinforce the flow of “Qi” energy and enhance the juxtaposition of richly textured architectural materials with architectural transparencies and pristine white sculptural forms to heighten the experience of motion and discovery. Flexible performance lighting, hidden tree grow lighting and monsoon-resistant fixtures were required in the open-air interior plaza. The project was one of the first to achieve the new Hong Kong Green Building Council’s BEAM Plus Gold rating, due in part to subtle façade downlighting that limits light pollution and allows the Xiqu Centre to sit proudly on the waterfront as a symbol of both the past and future of creative express
