Entry Description

Built in 1877, and once cloaked in darkness, the hidden beauty contained within H.H. Richardson’s Trinity Church is finally revealed through light, uncovering many ornate details, enlivening the heavenly space.

The previous lighting systems, which utilized inefficient incandescent sources, were installed in a piecemeal fashion resulting in low illumination making it difficult for parishioners to read liturgy.

The sanctuary is rejuvenated using multiple layers of warm ambient light. Functional illumination is provided for services and events while recently restored decorative elements throughout are carefully accented, revealing elaborate details for the first time in the church’s history. Luminaires are inconspicuously located and carefully detailed accommodating field conditions using bespoke mounting hardware, avoiding disruptions to historic architecture, and allowing the lighting system to fade into the background.

Ease of operation was critical to the design. A new lighting control system was installed, allowing staff to easily select preset scenes tailored to recurring events.

Nearly 150 years after its completion, this National Historic Landmark shines like never before.
