Entry Description

Completed in December 2020, the URBAN BLOOM is a remodeling project of the Galleria Department Store, a landmark in Daejeon built in the 1990s. Covering the façade, 5700 petal modules of nature-inspired concept were all designed in different shapes and sizes through algorithms, and LED modules were installed at the center of the flower to create media façade. The light diffusion cover of LED modules was designed in the shape of mini petal module to make it invisible during the day. Therefore, it dimensionally visualizes every 12-sided polygon in the sunlight while the entire building becomes 5700 pixel media when all LED modules in the center of petals lit up at night.
With a spacing of 1.5m, 5700 pixel covers the architecture with low pitch luminous dots. Media façades were intentionally displayed at a low resolution rather than sharp definition to make it look like a luminous body at a close range while producing concrete features at a distance, resulting in the reversal effect depending on a point of sight. Natural light and artificial light stay continuously in the façade of Urban Bloom, changing in various ways over time and space.
