Entry Description

ACTLD was commissioned to bring new visual attention to the iconic Cinquantenaire, a historic monument built in 1880 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Belgian Revolution.
The previous lighting system dated from the 1970s and was outdated and inefficient, consuming between 500 and 1,000 watts per lamp. Our studio was called upon for our care and commitment to high quality lighting schemes and high efficiency lighting systems reducing the overall original power consumption.
We created a subtle alternation of light and shadow to emphasize the rhythm of this classic monument, a play of color tones between inner spaces and facades to enhance the depth and perspective of this architectural masterpiece and added very specific accents to provide greater visual precision on stunning copper sculptures, thus generating a balanced, coherent and impressive visual impact for this major Brussels landmark.
A temporary partnership between Studio d'Urbanisme Jean-Pierre Majot, ACTLD and Vitech was established to develop a new lighting plan for this monument, providing two lighting scenarios (evening and night) designed specifically for consumption, aesthetic and light pollution reasons.
