Entry Description

MOXI is a children's museum located in Santa Barbara, California within a short walk to the ocean. Three custom exterior fixture types were designed with an ocean theme to convey a sense of playfulness and place.
For budget, the first sconces were made from solid brass vapor tights from Home Depot. Custom brass shades were cut and layered into the shape of kelp leaves and hung from brass arms resembling a strand of kelp with its gas bladders intact.
The second sconces were designed to resemble the kelp forests that line the California coast. To create the depth of a forest, sheets of brass were hand cut into kelp patterns and formed into cones. By inserting a smaller cone into a larger cone, layers of kelp plants emerge. An inner shade of clear sea blue glass allows for more visual depth and the feelings of an unwater experience.
