Entry DescriptionThe Hualien Liyu Lake Midsummer Light Festival reimagines a natural landmark as a cultural stage where community, ecology, and art converge. Beyond spectacle, the project sparks urban vitality and honors heritage, weaving narratives of mountains, butterflies, fireflies, and ginkgo trees as symbols of renewal and memory. The journey unfolds through seven zones: rippling blue lights at the entrance echo water’s rhythm, luminous butterflies animate stone pillars, and firefly lamps shimmer across the grass in dialogue with summer insects. Golden ginkgo avenues line the boardwalk, while pavilions glow with suspended spheres inviting pause and gathering. On the lake, sculptural mountain silhouettes interlaced with colorful ropes rise from floating platforms, encircled by floral lights embodying Mother Earth’s embrace. Technical precision—LED programming, concealed installations, and calibrated temperatures—ensures balance of brilliance and subtlety. More than an event, the festival enriches public space, drives the night economy, and strengthens cultural identity. Light becomes a language of diplomacy, transforming tradition into contemporary experience and inviting citizens and visitors to rediscover their bond with nature, heritage, and one another beneath the midsummer sky.
Sustainability ApproachSustainability in this project extends beyond environmental responsibility to cultural continuity. All installations use energy-efficient LED systems with precise programming to reduce power use, light spill, and ecological disruption—particularly protecting firefly habitats along Liyu Lake. Modular fixtures and rental-based equipment enable reuse and reduce waste, while non-invasive installation methods safeguard trees, soil, and waterfront integrity. The project also sustains the cultural ecosystem by revitalizing midsummer traditions with contemporary design, attracting tourism, supporting local businesses, and reinforcing community pride. By merging ecological sensitivity with cultural activation, the festival demonstrates a holistic approach to sustainability: creating seasonal spectacle while preserving the natural environment and ensuring long-term social value for the region.
