Entry DescriptionThis project explores the integration of contemporary lighting techniques within a heritage setting, creating a dialogue between history and modern use. The design balances functional illumination with atmospheric enhancement, ensuring both the architectural character and visitor experience are elevated. The project is honored with a nomination for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
In the interiors, discreet linear and track lighting highlights displays, artifacts, and textures without overpowering the space, supporting flexible programming for lectures, exhibitions, and gatherings while maintaining a calm, inviting atmosphere.
Exterior lighting emphasizes the natural character of the historic stone and adobe walls, using warm tones to accentuate materiality and depth. Ground lighting reveals rugged textures, while overhead fixtures ensure safe navigation. The design avoids visual clutter, enhancing spatial rhythm and guiding movement through light.
Overall, the scheme shows how light can transform heritage environments into vibrant cultural spaces. By layering functional, accent, and ambient lighting, it preserves authenticity while creating an adaptable setting for contemporary use, inviting visitors to connect with history and modernity.
Sustainability ApproachOur lighting design emphasizes sustainability by thoughtfully selecting and placing fixtures. Energy-efficient, long-lasting luminaires reduce maintenance, save materials, and lower energy use, supporting a circular approach and contributing to Energy & Atmosphere goals by minimizing operational energy and carbon footprint. Components are designed for longer use or responsible recycling, extending system life and reducing waste. Indoor Environmental Quality is a priority: glare is controlled, light levels suit each space, and visual fatigue is minimized, enhancing comfort and wellbeing. All luminaires operate cleanly, free of emissions, promoting a healthier and more responsible interior environment.
