Entry Description

The lighting design for Jumeirah Bali is a narrative journey into a romantic, abandoned Majapahit palace. Our guiding principle was that light must tell this story, crafting an immersive sanctuary where history and luxury intertwine.

The atmosphere is achieved primarily through a warm, indirect glow from carefully concealed sources, creating a mysterious, candle-lit ambiance. The cultural soul of the project is found in a complete family of custom lamps we designed to ensure a cohesive visual identity. This family including pendants, wall lamps, floor lamps, and table lamps, shares a common design language. Each piece integrates intricate motifs from Balinese carvings into forms crafted from brass and copper, celebrating the island's rich heritage in metalwork. A few of these pieces intentionally use halogen bulbs to cast crisp, artistic shadow patterns, turning surfaces into dynamic canvases.

Modern technology seamlessly serves this ancient narrative. Guests use intuitive keypads to select rich, pre-set scenes like "welcome" or "relax," ensuring a flawless experience without the visual intrusion of modern switches. The result is an environment where light and shadow define the space, creating an unforgettable atmosphere that is both timeless and authentically Balinese.
Sustainability Approach

Our first priority was energy efficiency. We maximized the use of LEDs throughout the project. Halogen bulbs were a minimal and deliberate exception, used only in specific custom lamps to create essential, artistic shadow patterns.

Next, we focused on reducing material waste. By leveraging the resort’s smart system, we replaced numerous switches with a few keypads controlling all room functions, lighting, AC, ceiling-fans, and curtains. This single move drastically cut down on plastic and electronic components while offering guests simple control over various room scenes.

Finally, the design is built for longevity. All fixtures are designed for component-level repair, so only a failed part is replaced, not the entire lamp. Our choice of traditional brass and copper supports this, as they are not only authentic to Bali but also exceptionally durable and highly recyclable materials.
