Entry DescriptionThis lighting design for the Keelung Art Museum acts as a bridge between historical eras, transforming the former city hall into a vibrant cultural hub. The core design concept is a carefully orchestrated dialogue between heritage and modernity, expressed through two distinct lighting typologies. The preserved palace lanterns anchor the space in history, casting a warm, subtle glow that grounds the visitor in a sense of place and time. They act as symbolic touchstones of memory. As a contemporary counterpoint, a modern luminous membrane ceiling provides a clean, uniform, and high-fidelity light, creating a neutral, shadowless canvas ideal for contemporary art. Beyond this foundational duality, the lighting becomes an active participant in the art itself. Programmable systems allow for the integration of specific colors or dynamic effects, transforming the gallery into an immersive environment that merges with the exhibition’s narrative. This juxtaposition creates a layered spatial experience—a space where history is not just preserved but is in active conversation with the present.
Sustainability ApproachThis lighting environment embodies a holistic sustainability, where design choices serve carbon reduction, cultural preservation, and social well-being. High-efficacy LEDs and an adaptive control system ensure minimal energy consumption. The system’s precise control also mitigates material degradation on the historic façade. This responsible illumination fosters an inviting public space, strengthening the community’s connection to its legacy. It proves that thoughtful lighting is a critical tool for sustainable heritage revitalization.
