Entry Description

Conceived as a civic beacon,this 35,000 sqft urban library is strategically located at the nexus of a leading hospital system, a cultural district, and a major university. The lighting design was integral to the architectural concept—positioning the library as a hub for inclusivity, innovation, and lifelong learning. The lighting concept draws from the architectural language of openness and transparency, using clean linear gestures and bold geometry to mirror the building’s expressive structural form. The interplay of daylight and electric light was central to the design, creating layered illumination adaptable to dynamic programmatic needs.
A series of rectilinear LED fixtures define the open ceilings, echoing the rhythm of the exposed structure while providing even, glare-free ambient illumination. The lighting reinforces the volumetric clarity of the large, open reading rooms and community areas. Vertical luminance was emphasized to support visual comfort and wayfinding throughout the space. Key challenges included maintaining aesthetic consistency across a highly varied set of program areas—from open public spaces to enclosed study rooms—while meeting strict energy codes and budgetary constraints. The lighting design team worked closely with the architect to conceal fixtures within architectural details and used custom mounting solutions to preserve the visual simplicity.
Sustainability Approach

The integration of daylight was a core priority. Zig-zagging curtainwalls and a central skylight, diffused through a custom barrisol fabric system, bring generous natural light deep into the interior. These features reduce dependence on electric light and provide circadian support for visitors and staff. Photocell-controlled zones and digital dimming allow the system to respond seamlessly to natural light changes throughout the day.

Sustainability was embedded in every decision, from low-wattage linear systems and daylight harvesting strategies to the selection of fixtures with high optical efficiency and serviceable components. The result is a space that performs exceptionally without visual clutter or compromise.
