Entry DescriptionThe lighting design of the Dockyard creates an elegant, open space, enhancing the interior material and creating focal points in the space.
Hidden luminaires create a diffuse light setting and illuminate walls. Materials are emphasized through the use, primarily, of 300K and CRI>90 luminaires. Installation challenges and minimal recess depth were overcome to create a luminous sky in the grid ceiling. Spotlights draw attention to important points in the space. In the design process, we conducted several studies and coordinated closely with the other disciplines to ensure that we could create a crisp, clean appearance from all angles.
This design questions the need to emphasize key features through additional layers of illumination, instead choosing to tastefully leave some with only ambient light. For example, the art piece in the center is provided no illumination of its own, emphasized instead by the reflections in the mirrored envelope. In this project, a holistic approach takes precedence over light levels in calculations, usually used as a benchmark.
The Dockyard lobby embodies the phrase “less is more.” In the vibrant, urban environment, this lobby invites us to slow down and focus on what comes next. It is a place to remember.
