Entry DescriptionThe lighting of this LEED Gold university chapel is transformative, using both daylighting and electric sources to create an extensive range of moods and ambiences – from ethereal, to celebratory, to contemplative.
The daylit sanctuary features a double-wall construction. The inner wall is a laser-cut perforated screen, offset from the solid perimeter wall. At top, a perimeter skylight rings the zone between the two layers.
The screen ultimately functions as a scrim. By day, sunlight filters through its perforations, opening the room up to the heavens. At night, the daylit chapel’s openness is recreated by turning on wallwashers behind the screen. Alternately, the sanctuary can be transformed into a solemn, contemplative space by turning these fixtures off and lighting the screen from the front. This flexible lighting solution accommodates occasions of all types.
By day and by night the lighting establishes the building as a symbol of hope, resurrection, comfort and compassion.
