Entry Description

AOAO, a contemporary Japanese izakaya & rooftop bar located in Central, fuses dining with an immersive experience of art and music within a gemstone-inspired interior. Imbued with the rich hues of jewels, smooth concrete at the entrance ushers visitors on an intriguing journey into a dining space imagined as an enchanting green realm.
As they step through the entrance, guests encounter a rotating stone structure that showcases the four characters of AOAO through an array of resin images. Cleverly hidden lighting fixtures activate as the structure shifts, illuminating the matching resin surfaces, bringing the restaurant's name to life through a sequence of pre-programmed lighting changes.
The strategic placement of projector lights in the dining area seamlessly enhances the theme without intruding upon the dining experience. The interplay of lighting upon a feature wall of resin art creates mesmerising interplays of green shadows and reflections, elevating the overall sensory ambience. Through the synergy of innovative lighting techniques, dynamic scenes, and unwavering attention to detail, the lighting design team transcended the ordinary, suffusing diners in an opulent aura of beauty and serenity.
The lighting design also seamlessly connected indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a cohesive and enchanting dining environment.
Sustainability Approach

Our lighting design embeds sustainability by blending cutting-edge technology with lifecycle materials optimisation approaches..
We prioritised locally sourced lighting fixtures to minimise the carbon footprint. We also incorporated the principle of modularity - rather than opting for "one-size-fits-all" lighting fixtures, we carefully curated modular units that allow selective replacement , so if a single component requires repairing, this can be achieved without disposing of the entire fixture, minimising lifecycle material waste.
We also implemented a wireless Bluetooth dimming system that eliminates extensive wiring work, resulting in a material-efficient outcome.
To integrate daylight, tunable white lighting panels were arranged to allow dynamic adjustment of colour temperature. This improves energy efficiency by reducing reliance on artificial lighting during daylight hours.
