Entry Description

To revitalize the iconic 1960s Century Plaza Hotel, the design team knit together three unique architectural styles and eras into a timeless and luxurious experience for the global traveler. Adapting and unifying the modernism of the original building with a lobby, spa, and guestroom design inspired by Japanese minimalist aesthetics originated in the 1800s, as well as a restaurant inspired by 1920s French bistro style, to be relevant for the 2020s and beyond was a meaningful challenge for the design team. The lighting design team’s approach was to use light not just as a functional element, but as a celebration of the journey through time, honoring the rich materials and unique details of each era and style.
Carefully crafted lighting solutions ensured that each area's unique character was enhanced, while creating a seamless transition for visitors as they move from one space to another. The use of advanced controls allowed for adaptability and integration, crucial in creating ambiance and functionality across varying spaces. Additionally, the project showcases a commitment to environmental stewardship, implementing energy-efficient solutions without compromising design integrity.
The end result demonstrates how thoughtful lighting can transcend mere illumination to become an integral part of the architectural experience, celebrating diversity and unity in design.
