Entry DescriptionThis project involved a comprehensive lighting renewal in Villanúa, a small town in the Aragonese Pyrenees. The installation replaced over 1,000 outdated discharge lamps (HPS and HM) with cutting-edge LED technology. Key goals were reducing energy consumption, mitigating light pollution, and enhancing the region’s potential as an astronomical tourism destination, all while preserving the natural environment.
The new LED luminaires, with ultra-warm 2200 K color temperatures, ensure minimal blue light emissions, protecting local wildlife and maintaining circadian rhythms. A patented anti-glare system enhances visual comfort, while the robust, weather-resistant materials used ensure durability against harsh mountain climates and corrosion from de-icing salts.
Moreover, the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD) was fully addressed using non-conductive polymer materials, making the luminaires immune to power surges that had previously damaged other systems. Designed to meet Starlight Certification standards, the project exemplifies how innovative, sustainable lighting can positively impact both the community and the surrounding environment.
Sustainability ApproachThe Villanúa lighting project integrates sustainability at its core:
Energy Efficiency: By replacing 1,000 outdated lamps with advanced LED technology, the project reduced energy consumption by over 70%, significantly lowering the municipality’s carbon footprint.
Light Pollution Reduction: The use of ultra-warm 2200 K LEDs, emitting only 1.28% blue light, minimizes skyglow and supports the Starlight Certification, preserving the natural night sky.
Circular Economy: The luminaires are crafted from 100% recyclable polymers, contributing to resource efficiency and waste reduction.
Durability: Built to endure extreme mountain conditions and resist corrosion, the design enhances long-term sustainability by reducing maintenance and replacement needs.
This comprehensive approach showcases Villanúa’s commitment to sustainability and sets a model for other municipalities.
