Entry Description

The Museo de Santiago is a historical monument built in 1779. Following the 2010 earthquake, the monument sustained severe damage, prompting the Santiago town council to launch a comprehensive restoration and refurbishment project. In 2016, we won the public tender to design both the architectural and museographic lighting for the museum.
Our primary objectives were to incorporate contemporary lighting systems that respect the monument's heritage while creating an unforgettable visitor experience. The core of our design was integrating lighting into the structures that the museographic team designed to support graphic panels. This approach allowed for indirect lighting, which not only highlights the architecture of the house but also functions as a practical service and maintenance solution. At the base of these structures, we installed museographic lighting using track-mounted technical spotlights.
This strategy avoided modifications to the historic wooden ceiling and ensures the lighting systems can be removed in the future without leaving any trace. We also designed dynamic lighting for the museum’s 10 dioramas, treating them like miniature theater stages to enhance focus and engagement.
The eight-year design and construction process was a collaborative effort across multidisciplinary teams, and all lighting systems are fully controlled through a central management system.
Sustainability Approach

The sustainability strategy for this project focused primarily on the efficiency of lighting sources and a smart control system that automatically activates the desired lighting scenarios at optimal times.
For the exterior patio, which covers 289 m², the lighting power density is 0.27 W/m². The patio is illuminated by 23 spotlights, each consuming 3W.
Inside the museum, the exhibition area also spans 289 m², with a lighting power density of 7.78 W/m², which includes both service and museographic lighting.
