Entry Description

The Morris Park Business Improvement District launched in June 2024 “The Pulse,” the first large-scale light installation and the largest public-art display in the Bronx, located on Morris Park Avenue on the fence of Loreto Playground between Haight Avenue and Tomlinson Avenue. “The Pulse” highlights connections between people, the perpetual transformation of communities united in shared love for our neighborhoods, all centered around a beating heart. The installation enhances Loreto Park as the center of the Morris Park community, the place families come to spend time together, relax and enjoy green space.

The 110 feet long interactive light fixture installed 9 feet above ground on the park fence is dynamic and versatile, changing colors and patterns to accompany culturally relevant community celebrations and special occasions. The installation depicts two interconnected strings of light in DNA-like spiral pattern framing a central heart-shaped piece. The installation was designed by Limbic Media and programmed with engaging and soft motion patterns, captivating the viewer around the central heart-shaped element, as a symbol of life, love, connection and vibrancy. The project was commissioned and co-designed by the Morris Park Business Improvement District and executed by Limbic Media, through a NYC Department of Small Business Services, with the support of ConEd.
Sustainability Approach

The project focuses on social sustainability, by creating a sense of community and shared celebration on a Bronx commercial corridor that lacks a central element of focus - like a plaza. The space around The Pulse becomes the default
site of the community coming together, by either using the sidewalk benches or the multi-purpose sports field on the park grounds.
The installation is LED and connected to the NYC electric public network on ConEd poles.
