Entry Description

The refurbishment of a 1980s office in the City of London includes a refreshed external façade, a new semi-public ground floor and a new rooftop terrace capitalising on stunning views across the city. To meet the client's net zero carbon ambitions, the 12 storey scheme features an innovative structural glazing system on the ground floor, new lifts and core reconfiguration, prefabricated bathroom systems and flexible office space with exposed ceilings.
The unique palette of black with black meant that standard lighting could not be used. Backlighting to the ceiling produces a warm upward high-level wash; a bright daylit ceiling yet retaining black as a translucent layer.
Control of all exterior lighting luminaires links to a photocell unit and astronomical time clock. Internally lighting responds to the character and function of each space with a system of lit effect and luminaire types, enabling good passive security and maintenance with an emphasis on sustainability by maximising lamp life and minimising energy consumption. Light sources were chosen for their efficacy, colour rendition and longevity together with their performance, material construction, design and fabrication.
