Entry Description

80 Collins is an iconic addition to Melbourne CBD, as a jewel within the city’s Skyline. The design aspiration for each lobby is to create a unique space - transforming something that typically serves as a functional corporate reception into a place of culture and art.

The lighting concept integrates the aesthetic of a minimalist modern reception with art gallery lighting performance, always keeping the materials and lighting palette comfortable and approachable to the general public. Closely related but finely distinguished aesthetically, the architectural lighting for the two lobbies is designed to emphasise their unique interior geometry and materiality - the warmth of travertine and cool softness of sand-blasted stainless steel.

The primary lighting system combines illuminated visual lines and recessed channels concealing spotlights for art gallery style lighting. A second lighting system is comprised of linear wall washers within architectural details that highlight the warm tones of honed travertine stone surfaces, offset by satin-finished stainless-steel panels. The main feature stair is flanked by discretely integrated handrail lighting. Lift lobbies are featured by backlit ceilings that create soft diffuse light.

The lighting compliments the understated elegance of the architectural design for a corporate and cultural amenity in the centre of Melbourne’s CBD.
