Project Location Moab UT
Entry DescriptionThe site lighting was designed thoughtfully to offer a safe and vibrant atmosphere to hotel guests, while preserving the beauty of the night sky in Moab, UT.
The essence of the project was to balance conflicting needs defined by Moab's dark sky ordinance, Utah's administrative code for pool safety, and the client's desire for a lively atmosphere.
Entering the porticochere, constellation-esque points of light welcome and set the stage to this profound landscape. Lanternlike poles illuminate faces around the playground but spill no light into the sky with a U value of 0. Shielded 18" bollards in the pool area satisfy the code required 5fc horizontal illuminance, but allow uninterrupted views into the sky and a relaxing ambience for guests.
Parking lot lighting is fully shielded, with glare reducing accessories and and tight light trespass control, respecting guests' sleep and nature around. Corridors illuminated with concealed handrail lighting preserve connection to sky. The building glows softly, reflecting only light from the handrail lighting.
Carefully measured lighting offers a highly poetic and atmospheric experience of both the natural skyscape and designed landscape.
